Behind the scenes of Prom 2018
May 4, 2018
The highly anticipated dance juniors and seniors have been waiting for is almost here. Prom is a spectacular night filled with lots of dancing, endless laughs, and memories one will never forget. Every student pictures their prom as a fairy tale and hopes for the perfect night. Although prom should be the perfect night, it is not a simple as waving a magic wand. The planning of prom is often taken for granted and students tend to set high expectations for their prom experience. Only a few number people really acknowledge and understand what all goes into organizing prom. The mastermind behind it all is the well-known club on campus, Student Government Association. SGA plays a major role in planning the perfect prom for all the upperclassman.
“When planning prom, you have to think about ways to pass out the goodie bags, ways to have everyone at prom vote for prom royalty…. in a fair way, the food you want to serve and how it will accommodate everyone,” junior Courtney Redmond said.
Prom is a huge event and does not take one person to make it happen. The members of SGA have put all hands on deck and are dedicated to this team effort. They have divided into sub organization committees to split up the work and make the job easier.
“I helped pick out the crowns, the food, and some decorations we thought would look really nice ,” junior Hannah Mulroney said.
Not only are there “Swag bags” that have to be put together, but setting the price of prom tickets can be quite the challenge as there are various factors that have to be weighed in.
“The venue is right around 20,000 dollars, so I automatically establish a price of 40 dollars per person that pays for that venue, based on about 550 people,” SGA Advisor Tiffany McCann said. “Then we spend about 10 dollars per person on the bag, 7 dollars per person on the DJ, and the about 10 bucks per person on the decorations. The four main components that make up the 75 dollars for each ticket are the decorations, DJ, location, and swag bag.”
When organizing prom, there are many things that have to be put into consideration and it can be quite stressful. Between finding a location to deciding the theme, prom is made up of a plethora of different factors and when one detail is messed up, it can all go downhill from there.
“Organizing prom is stressful, but it’s a good kind of stress,” McCann said. “At the end of the day when you step back and get a look at the finished product, it’s pretty amazing.”
Ultimately, prom doesn’t come with an instruction manual and it is a hard task to fulfill. SGA runs it all and puts in so much time into making prom a magical night. So, if you are attending prom, be sure to give SGA a big thank you for all their hard work and dedication to making prom one of the best nights in your lifetime.
