It’s that time of year, again. When there is only one thing on our minds; homecoming. From shopping for the perfect outfit to cheering for the football team at the homecoming game, it can be hard not to get into the spirit. One of the traditions that really get the students into the celebratory mood is voting for homecoming king and queen. Winning king or queen is something several students dream about for years. Now as they enter their final year of high school, seniors have stepped forward to try and claim the sought after crown. After a week of campaigning, talking to students and passing out goodies, it all comes down to your vote. Still not sure who to vote for? Well fortunately, we have all of your 2017 homecoming candidates here! Read all about them and keep your favorites in mind when it comes time to vote.

ALEX MARTINEZ

Where you have seen them: Cross Country, Track and SGA

Why are they running? “Because I feel like as seniors, we should step up and find a way to be more involved with the school.”

Why they should win: “If people have a good time and have fun, they can vote for me.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “Congratulations,” by Post Malone.

Their favorite experience so far: “It is a little weird talking to people I don’t know but it has been fun getting to know new people.”

Message to their competitors: “Good luck to them but I’m probably gonna beat you guys. Hopefully. ”

DAVID BLAIR

Where you have seen them: Manager of the football, cheerleading and baseball teams.

Why are they running? “I ran last year and while I won, I had a good time doing it, it was really fun. I am hoping I can win again this year because I have always dreamed of it since one of my friends won homecoming king, Matt Morley, and I was like, ‘If he can run and win, I can win it too.”

Why they should win: “I am very popular, I like what I’m doing for school with trying to get an education. I also like to do football (GO TITANS). I hope I win the crown because I believe I deserve it and it’s the right thing to do.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “Kick the dust up,” by Luke Bryan.

Their favorite experience so far: “Putting up posters and also handing out candy and trying to get people to vote.”

Message to their competitors: “Good luck and I hope they do good.”

TIMOTHY REAHL

Where you have seen them: Baseball

Why are they running? “I’m running for homecoming to add to the homecoming experience.”

Why they should win: “I feel like I should win because I get along with everyone and I’m always involved at school events.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “Headlines,” by Drake

Message to their competitors: “Good luck and don’t take this too seriously.”

KAILEY KRUID

Where you have seen them: SGA and NHS

Why are they running? “I’m running for homecoming court just because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I love campaigning and I’m a very outgoing person, so I wouldn’t mind putting myself out there. I chose to run for homecoming queen because I love all of the activities we get to be apart of, including riding in the parade.”

Why they should win: “I believe I should win because I’ve always been the type of person involved in University. I’ve attended pretty much every football game, I attend any other sports game I can go to. I have so much school spirit that I would love to be able to represent University High as it’s 2017 homecoming queen.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “On top of the world,” by Imagine Dragons.

Their favorite experience so far: “Bri and I literally spent an entire day making posters and then the person I was running with got suspended.”

Message to their competitors: “To my competitors, I honestly feel like anyone could win this and all of us deserve to. We’ve all worked really hard and I’ll be the first person on that football field to hug you and congratulate you on your win.”

DIANA VELAZQUEZ

Where you have seen them: Powderpuff and spirit squad

Why are they running? “Most of my friends were like, ‘Why don’t you do it if other people have done it and not just the most popular kids’, so I decided to run.”

Why they should win: “Most people that run are the popular kids who most people know and I talk to everyone, not just the cool people.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “1-800-273-8255,” by Logic.

Message to their competitors: “No matter what, we are still gonna be friends!”

KAYLA HARTMAN

Where you have seen them: Varsity soccer team, NHS and Rho Kappa

Why are they running? “I am running because I have wanted to run since I was a sophomore. Plus, It’s something that I would never usually do!”

Why they should win: “I don’t think I’m entitled to win. I just wanted to apart of the experience but it would be an honor to win.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “My house,” by Flo Rida

Their favorite experience so far: “When I had everyone over to make posters, we had one poster with puffy paint on it and my friend spent three hours on another poster, but the puffy paint got all over the one that took three hours to make.”

Message to their competitors: “To my competitors, I would wish them the best of luck and to enjoy the experience.”

KAYLA JONES

Where you have seen them: Biomedical Academy, Rho Kappa, Earth and Surf and the softball team

Why are they running? “I thought running would be something fun to do for my senior year.”

Why they should win: “I have a long-standing relationship with UHS dating back to my brother being a part of one of the first classes to open the school. I have followed and supported the school and all the athletic and academic activities since its existence and because of this, I feel that I am a strong representative of university high school and anything of it stands for. Follow the creed.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “I’m the one,” by DJ Khalid, ft Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne.

Their favorite experience so far: “Everyone came together to help me out and all of the social experience I had meeting new people made me a lot closer to everyone on campus.”

Message to their competitors: “I wish everyone the best of luck! Everyone of us deserves the crown.”

KAITLYN ANDERSON

Where you have seen them: President of Rho Kappa, Business editor of UHSpress and Quill and Scroll.

Why are they running? “I just want my high school career to be worth something and I want to represent the people who aren’t super popular or super athletic. I want to represent the people consider themselves average.  I want to represent the average class.”

Why they should win: “I want to be a face for every type of kid who goes here. Whether it’s the artistic kids, the funny kids, the quiet kids or the nerdy kids. I hope that if I won, that it would feel as though we all have won. I want to prove that if you put yourself out there, you can do amazing things.”

The song that would play when they are crowned: “Celebration,” by Kool and the Gang.

Their favorite experience so far: “I made T-shirts from the,”Napoleon Dynamite,” movie that says, “Vote for Pedro,” and then I crossed out Pedro to put my name. While I thought a few people would find it funny, I had the absolute greatest response to it to the point people were willing to buy one from me. It wasn’t like they wanted a regular, “Vote for Pedro,” shirt, they wanted one with my name on it. They were so excited about it and it made them feel included and apart of this campaign with me.”

Message to their competitors: “It’s been really fun and everyone has put in so much effort that they deserve to win and have a great experience.”
